L'Intervista
Hikari Kesho

Interview – Hikari Kesho

1) Alberto Lisi, what has driven you to look into and, at one point, fall in love with oriental culture?
I have always been attracted by martial arts, I have practiced judo and karate to the extent that I began to get involved with oriental philosophy, approaching not only the artistic side but also the spiritual one.
2) Do you remember your first conscious approach to shibari?
Of course! While doing some research I came across a tie which I tried to copy on my unfortunate model, my muse at the moment, obviously with very little success. I had to untie her rapidly for the pain that both the tie and the type of rope used were causing.
3) There is a 3D approach when speaking about shibari : the creators point of view, otherwise known as the Rigger, the model and the spectator. Mr. Alberto Lisi, would you like to explain?
My artistic approach with shibari is more photographical than performant so in my case the spectator “uses” the image rather than assisting to a live performance act, while Rigger and model are the creators of a work which takes nourishment from its very last moment, that final instant in which aesthetics meets its highest form of expression.
4) Could we associate shibari with sculpture?
Absolutely, it’s what drives my artistic research to the use of this technique : using ropes to transform and enhance the body of the model as if it were a true living sculpture.
5 ) How does the creation of your work evolve from a technical point of view?
It’s a relatively long process, which starts with identifying the subject, often motivated by an inspiring location, an atmosphere, a model with particular characteristics. Successively there is the graphical project, in the sense of how the subject should be composed inside the photo. Last but not least, the organization and the execution which both bring a number of issues, often increasingly so due the choice of “original” settings.
6) Having obtained mastery in this discipline, which requires a good amount of competence, what does Alberto Lisi want to express?
Beauty, fascination, eroticism …. those qualities which are innate in the human body, more precisely a woman’s body which I prefer, which I try to capture and, if ever possible, enhance with the help of light and ropes.
7) Which are the difficulties you come across in the creation of your masterpiece?
The difficulties vary depending on the kind of project : they can be linked to the setting we choose, climatic conditions, character and emotionality of the model or her state of mind at the moment of the performance, as well as the light which may be more or less favorable, which I usually control with the help of portable flash units and other equipment to better mould the body of the model. Working outdoors, in public places increases the tension and loads me with responsibility towards my crew which accept to work in situations which are often at the limit of legality. Tension and emotion don’t help the model, which is exposed and vulnerable in difficultly controllable situations, having to rely blindly on my professionalism as well as that of my staff.
8) What hides behind the final click …. What does it add to the project?
The final click is the shot that amongst all the ones taken during the session mostly represents and expresses the emotions that my model an myself were craving to share. When this happens the whole project stands, without it all efforts are vain.
9) Alberto, how does it feel when towards the end of the creation you capture the image with your shots?
It’s overwhelming, a joy which penetrates the soul, a big gratification for my ego.
10) Shooting performed shibari is a normal operation, but all this has a different meaning to you, the versatile qualities of your artistic spirituality allow you to extend the “possession” of your creation …. You create it, you perform it, you shoot it, stimulating, demanding, is it a normal process for you or is it a need?
I would say both, it comes natural because it blends two big passions : photography which is a part of all my life and shibari which permeates my artistic research since 15 years. At the same time it is a need driven by my professional inclination, yet before the artistic one, to create my own subjects. In fashion I choose the styling, the look, the make-up, the poses and expressions of the model which from my point of view are more appropriate to transfer the message I want to convey.  It was a logical consequence that in my artistic photos I should be the one in charged to create the subject following my emotions rather than interpreting someone else’s.
11) Location, consciousness of the body structure, technical knowledge of the ties, what is your attention mainly focused on?
Strangely enough what I take less care about is the tying technique, which represent for me a means and not the  purpose and which must basically contribute to the final aesthetics. Obviously I don’t withdraw from the functional aspect for safety reasons. The representation of the sculptural aesthetics of the body and an adequate setting which enhances even more it’s characteristics from an emotional point of view are the elements I mainly concentrate on.
12) The different types of ties are mainly structural or symbolic solutions?
I would define them as graphical, there is a minimum amount of structure required to support the model, for the rest I look for solutions with lines that track well-balanced and eye catching paths, as required by the Japanese school of thought.

13 ) Which type of evolution have your works had?
The more evident one is from indoors to outdoors: at an early stage I was more concentrated on the ropes, I needed to experiment, to learn and the quiet of the studio was perfect for this. Successively however the repetitively of the background, the impersonal and unrealistic aspect which resulted was not sufficient any more, I felt the need to collocate my “sculptures” in a living frame which could contribute and which could also transmit and express emotions …..
14) Which one of your pictures would you choose as a summary of your experience?
Surely the one in Venice, Piazza S. Marco, it’s the one in which all the elements I wish to see in a photo are resumed and expressed with the correct balance and proportion.
15) Alberto, in which context will this passion evolve in the future?
The line which at the moment gives me greater satisfaction is the one which involves “risky” artistic performances, which grant you that one-off shot, like the one in Venice. I only have to imagine which will be the setting for my next creation …. S. Peter’s – Rome? The Eiffel Tower – Paris?
